I-83/PA 581 Bottleneck Interchange Safety Improvements & Lowther Street Bridge Replacement

Northbound I-83 traffic in the morning peak period typically backs up beyond Limekiln Road, a distance of two miles

This bottleneck safety project is intended to improve traffic and safety issues at the “I-83 York Split” extending from the New Cumberland Interchange (Exit 40B) to the John Harris Bridge over the Susquehanna River. The proposed roadway improvements include a bridge replacement on SR 2028 (Lowther Street in the Borough of Lemoyne) along the existing roadway horizontal alignment, vertical alignments and reconstruction, guide rail updates, and drainage improvements. The project also involved the construction of a temporary roadway and bridge over I-83. Dawood prepared traffic signal plans, temporary traffic signal plans, sign structures, erosion and sedimentation control, signing and pavement marking plans, supplemental survey and the design of 3 interconnected signalized intersections along Lowther Street in Lower Allen Township and Lemoyne Borough.
