This Bio-Safe Level 3 laboratory facility is a 37,000-square-foot addition to the existing state veterinary laboratory building in Harrisburg, PA. The building structure is composed of steel frames and supporting concrete composite floor slabs. Portions of the frame and slab are depressed for the cold room construction; allowing for insulation and a topping slab. A portion of the building’s penthouse floor slab is raised to accommodate the extension of the monorail system from the existing building to the new addition. Since a portion of the addition will be constructed within a steeply sloping hill, suitable bearing rises steeply across the building site. Therefore, a mix of standard spread footing and steel pile foundations with grade beams were used. Cap and grade wall elevations are stepped to match topography. Portions of the north and east walls of the building are design as retaining walls to support varying grade levels around the perimeter of the building.
